Byron Bay is very well known for it’s gorgeous beaches, and rightly so, Wategoes and The Pass are two of my favourite beaches in the world, but there are also lots of hidden gems in the hinterland that are well worth the trip to visit.
One of those is Nightcap National Park. A very scenic 45 minutes drive from Byron Bay through gorgeous farm land and rainforests.
The flagship hike in Nightcap is Minyon Falls and it is a fairly easy 4km, 2 hour return hike. The path is mainly wide and not too rocky and descends down to the waterfalls, leaving you to climb back up to your car. Our two year old daughter managed a good portion of the hike on her own. There is a little rock hopping close to the falls but nothing too tricky.
Starting at the carpark make sure you visit the lookout to see where you will be walking to, and then head on down. Take time to notice the light filtering through the trees, the plethora of bird calls (our little one loved trying to guess what birds she could hear!) and tiny details like the mushrooms and toadstools growing on fallen logs. Pack a picnic or snack to enjoy at the falls and take your time to soak up the peaceful vibe.
I recommend a stop en route or on the way home for breakfast/lunch/coffee/sushi at the fabulous Japanese fusion restaurant Doma, nestled in the cute little hilltop town of Federal.
