There are some places whose quiet, simple beauty will never end up on the front page of a travel magazine, but whose effect on you will remain for a long time. The Dorrigo National Park, in my mind, is one such place. The way the light filters through the trees, illuminating particular foliage and hiding other areas away. The patterns in the sky made by the leaves as the sun shines on the shapes and holes in the shapes. The gentle, steady waterfalls, not gushing but softly falling and the plethora of rainbows. The sound of the birds hidden away in the treetops. It is the sort of ancient place that seems to exist to nuture the soul of weary humans and instil in those who visit a reverence for nature and a commitment to look after her.
The rainforest centre is an easy, and beautiful, 30 or so minute drive from Belligen (on the New South Wales coast, just inland of Coffs Harbour). Winding through farm land, beside creeks, past horses, and if you are lucky enough to visit in Autumn, a stunning line of trees bursting with red, orange and yellow leaves. The walking is easy, on a mostly flat and pretty level path. Perfect for little adventurers. We used our Ergo Baby when tiny legs got tired but the visitor’s centre also have a frame backpack for loan. Allow a few hours if you like to stop and take hundreds of photos like me! There is a lovely picnic spot around 15 minutes walk from the finish which is a perfect place to take a break.
Be prepared to return to your car a little calmer, a little in awe, and with a big appreciation of the beauty of nature.
